Inonotus tomentosus (Fr.) Teng Fruit body annual. Bracket up to 11cm across, circular to fan-shaped, sometimes lobed, with a central depression; yellowish brown to wood brown, sometimes with faint concentric bands of color; felty. Tubes up to 3mm deep, decurrent; white stuffed and paler than flesh. Pores 2-4 per mm, angular; surface pale buff becoming darker brown; with thick entire dissepiments that become thin and lacerate with age. Stem 35 x 15mm, central or lateral; dark brown. Flesh up to 4mm thick, soft, spongy upper layer, firm fibrous lower layer; yellowish brown. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 5-6 x 3-4µ. Hyphal structure monomitic. Habitat singly or several branching from a common base on coniferous wood. Found throughout most of North America except the Midwest. Season all year. Not edible.
